Shopify script tags stop on March 1, 2027: what breaks and how to get ready
Script tags are the old way apps add code to your storefront. In 143 days Shopify stops loading them. Features that still depend on them disappear from your store without any error message. This guide explains what changes, how to check your store in five minutes and what to do for each app.
What is changing
- August 24, 2026: Shopify announces the change in its developer changelog.
- October 1, 2026: Apps can no longer create or update script tags.
- March 1, 2027: Shopify stops loading script tags on storefronts.
Apps must replace script tags with app embeds, which you turn on in your theme editor, or with web pixels for analytics. Web pixels need no action from you. App embeds do: each one has to be switched on in your theme, and an app that has not released one will stop working on your storefront. Source: Shopify developer changelog.
What can break
Anything an app adds to your storefront with a script tag: product reviews and star ratings, chat widgets, pop-ups and email sign-up forms, wishlists, upsell widgets, translation switchers, tracking scripts. Nothing in your admin will warn you. The feature just stops showing on your store.
How to check your store
By hand
- Open your storefront in a browser. If it is password protected, enter the password first.
- View the page source (Ctrl+U on Windows, Option+Command+U on a Mac).
- Search for
asyncLoad. The addresses listed aftervar urls =are the script tags Shopify loads on your store today. - For each address, work out from its domain which app added it.
With EmbedReady
EmbedReady, a Shopify app, runs these steps for you: it lists every script tag, names the app it belongs to, tells you what to do, and checks which app embeds are still turned off in your published theme. The scan and the summary are free.
What to do for each app
- The app offers an app embed. Go to Online Store, Themes, Customize, then App embeds, and turn it on. Check on your storefront that the feature still works.
- The app has no app embed yet. Ask the app's support when they will move from script tags to an app embed. If the app is no longer maintained, choose an alternative before March 1, 2027.
- You don't recognise the script. Look in Settings, Apps for apps you no longer use. Removing an unused app normally removes its script tags too; if a script stays, ask the app's developer.
- Check again after each change, so nothing is left behind before the deadline.
Frequently asked questions
Will my apps fix this on their own?
Many apps are moving to app embeds, but an app embed only works once it is turned on in your theme. Apps that are no longer maintained will simply stop working on your storefront.
Does it affect my checkout?
The change is about your online store pages. Script tags on the order status page were already covered by an earlier Shopify deprecation.
What about tracking and analytics scripts?
Shopify asks apps to move tracking to web pixels, which need no action from you. It is still worth checking that each tracking app has made the move.
Do I need a developer?
Usually not. Turning on an app embed is a switch in the theme editor, and contacting an app's support takes a few minutes.
